Definition
自如 (zì rú) describes actions or manner that are free, easy, and unconstrained — doing something with natural smoothness, as if no effort is needed. Unlike 顺利 (shùn lì 'smooth, without obstacles'), which focuses on a process going well externally, 自如 emphasizes the person's internal ease and control. It is more formal and refined than 自由 (zì yóu 'free, unrestricted'), which is about freedom from rules or constraints.
