Definition
臣 (chén) in classical and imperial China refers to a person in a subordinate role relative to the ruler — a subject, minister, or official. In court contexts, it was also used as a humble self-reference meaning 'I, your servant' when addressing the emperor. Today it appears in historical texts, dramas, and formal expressions like the idiom 忠臣 (loyal minister). The word is not used in everyday modern conversation except in fixed phrases or literary references.
