Definition
脱离 (tuō lí) means to separate from or break away from something, such as a group, situation, or reality. It is broader than 摆脱 (bǎi tuō 'get rid of'), which implies actively freeing oneself from something negative, and more formal than 脱 (tuō 'take off/escape'). Unlike 脱身 (tuō shēn 'get away'), which focuses on escaping a specific task, 脱离 can refer to leaving a larger entity or being divorced from reality.
