Definition
胚胎 (pēi tāi) is the scientific/medical term for an embryo, specifically the early stage of development (in humans, up to about 8 weeks). It contrasts with 胎儿 (tāi ér), which refers to the later-stage fetus and is more common in everyday language. 胎 (tāi) can also mean fetus but is often used as a classifier or in compounds.
