Definition
老太太 (lǎo tài tai) is a respectful term for an elderly lady, and can also colloquially mean one's mother or mother-in-law. Unlike 老人 (general 'elderly person') or 老人家 (polite but gender-neutral), 老太太 specifically addresses a woman. It is more formal than 大妈 (dà mā) and distinct from 姥姥 (maternal grandmother) and 太太 (wife or Mrs.).
