Definition
绝食 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning to abstain from eating. It covers both voluntary fasting (for health, religion, or diet) and political hunger strikes as a form of protest. When you need to add a duration or a measure word, the verb 绝 and the object 食 split: 绝了三天食 ('fasted for three days'). The object 食 cannot take a separate modifier; instead, the duration goes between the two syllables.
