Definition
结缘 means 'to form a connection or bond', often with the connotation of fate or karmic ties. It can be used in Buddhist contexts (karmic bonds) but also in everyday language to describe getting involved with or becoming linked to something (a hobby, a place, a person). It is a separable verb (离合词): the verb 结 can separate from 缘, e.g., 结了缘 ('formed a bond'), 结过缘 ('had formed a bond'). When specifying who/what you bond with, use 与 or 和 before the object: 与佛结缘 (to bond with Buddhism), 和这个城市结缘 (to become connected with this city).
v.o.
to form ties or connections (originally a Buddhist concept of karmic bonds)(extended) to become involved or linked with something (e.g., a hobby, a place, a person)
