简介 (jiǎn jiè) is a brief introduction that presents the basics of a book, product, or person. Unlike 总结 (zǒng jié), which summarizes something already completed, or 摘要 (zhāi yào), which extracts key points from a longer text, 简介 is meant to introduce and entice. As a verb, it means 'to give a brief introduction'.
