Definition
突兀 (tū wù) has two senses: (1) towering abruptly from a flat surface (terrain, rocks); (2) sudden or out of place (events, speech, behavior). Unlike 突然 (tū rán), which only means 'sudden,' 突兀 adds a nuance of being jarring or sticking out; unlike 高大 (gāo dà), which just means 'tall and big,' it emphasizes a sharp rise.
