空气 (kōng qì) is the standard word for 'air' as the gas we breathe — the most common term for the atmosphere around us. Unlike 气 (qì), which is broader (air, gas, smell, breath), 空气 is specific to the air itself; 空中 (kōng zhōng) refers to 'in the air' as a location, and 气氛 (qì fēn) is the figurative 'atmosphere' of a place.
