Definition
离婚 (lí hūn) means 'to divorce' — ending a marriage legally. It is a separable verb: 离了婚 (divorced), 离过婚 (has been divorced). Unlike 离开 (lí kāi 'to leave' a place or person) and 分离 (fēn lí 'to separate' physically or emotionally), 离婚 is only used for marriage dissolution.
