Definition
离任 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to leave a post', used formally for officials or people in positions of responsibility. When you want to add how long or when the leaving happened, you can split it: 离了任 ('left the post'), 离任之前 ('before leaving the post'). The object (the post) is embedded in the word itself, so you don't place another object after it.
v.o.
