碰见 (pèng jiàn) is a compound verb meaning 'to run into (someone) unexpectedly'. It emphasizes the chance, unplanned nature of the encounter, more so than 遇到 or 遇见, which are more general 'come across'. Unlike 撞 (zhuàng) 'to bump into physically', 碰见 is used only for meeting people by chance.
