Definition
破案 (pò àn) is a separable verb (离合词) that specifically means 'to solve a criminal case'. It is more precise than the general 解决 (jiě jué, 'solve/resolve'), which applies to problems, disputes, etc. Note that 破 (pò) alone can also mean 'solve a case' in some contexts, but 破案 is the standard compound used in police contexts.
