研究 (yán jiū) means 'to research, to study' in a systematic, academic way. It is broader than 查 (chá), which is for looking up specific facts, and less intense than 钻研 (zuān yán), which implies deep, meticulous study. 研究 can also be used as a noun (e.g., 一项研究 'a study').
