Definition
相映 means 'to set each other off' or 'to form a contrast' — it's used when two things (often colors, scenes, or abstract qualities) are placed together and their contrast or complement makes each one stand out more. Unlike 对比 (subjective comparison), 相映 describes an objective visual or aesthetic relationship. It often appears with 成趣 (相映成趣) meaning 'to be so contrasting that it's charming / creates interest'. The pattern is usually A与B相映 or A和B相映 (A and B set each other off).
