Definition
直系 refers to a direct, lineal relationship — most commonly used for immediate family members (parents, children, spouse) as opposed to collateral relatives (uncles, cousins). It also applies to direct descent in genealogy (直系祖先, 直系后代). You'll see it in legal and administrative contexts like 直系亲属 (immediate family) or 直系血亲 (lineal blood relative).
