皇帝 (huángdì) is the standard general term for an emperor, the male ruler of an empire. 皇上 (huángshang) is a more respectful title used when addressing him directly or speaking of him with deference, like 'Your Majesty'; 皇后 (huánghòu) refers to the empress, the emperor's wife.
