Definition
皇后 (huánghòu) is the title for an empress consort — the wife of an emperor (皇帝, huángdì). Unlike 皇帝, who is the male ruler, 皇后 is not a reigning monarch herself. A female emperor is called 女皇帝 (nǚ huángdì), not 皇后.
