Definition
皇军 (huáng jūn) is the Chinese reading of the Japanese term 'kōgun' (Imperial Army), which was the self-address used by the Japanese military during its invasion and occupation of China (1937–1945). In Chinese historical and contemporary discourse, the term is almost exclusively used with a critical or condemnatory tone, referring to the Japanese invading forces and their war crimes. It is a loaded term — never neutral — and appears mostly in historical accounts, documentaries, or discussions of WWII in East Asia.
