登 (dēng) means to climb (mountain/stairs), publish/record, or step on/tread. For climbing, 登 implies ascending via steps, unlike 爬 which uses hands and knees. For stepping, 登 is used in 'step onto' or 'press with foot', while 踩 is the everyday word for treading on any surface.
