Definition
甩掉 is a resultative verb: 甩 (to swing/shake) + 掉 (off/away). It means to shake off or get rid of something that is following or sticking — literal (a tailing car) or figurative (a bad habit, a boyfriend). Like other resultative verbs, it can be split with 得 or 不 to express possibility: 甩得掉 (can shake off) / 甩不掉 (can't shake off). The object is placed after the whole compound: 甩掉尾巴 (shake off the tail).
