Definition
甥 (shēng) is a bound form (b.f.) that cannot stand alone; it must combine with 外 (wài) to form 外甥 (wàishēng, 'nephew') or 外甥女 (wàishēngnǚ, 'niece'), referring specifically to the children of one's sister (from the perspective of the maternal aunt or uncle). This distinguishes it from 侄 (zhí), which refers to the children of one's brother.
b.f.
(bound form) nephew or niece (one's sister's child; used in compounds like 外甥, 外甥女)
