Definition
生根 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to take root', used both literally for plants and figuratively for ideas, customs, or influences. When you add a complement or duration, the verb 生 and the object 根 can separate — for example, 生了根 ('took root') or 生根发芽 ('take root and sprout'). You cannot put a direct object after 生根; instead, use a location phrase with 在 before the verb.
