Definition
猩 (xīng) is a bound morpheme (b.f.) — it cannot stand alone as a word. It appears in disyllabic and trisyllabic compounds that name the great apes: 猩猩 (xīngxing, orangutan), 大猩猩 (dàxīngxing, gorilla), and 黑猩猩 (hēixīngxing, chimpanzee). You will never use 猩 by itself; it always attaches to other syllables in these animal names.
