爷爷 (yé ye) is the common, everyday word for a person's paternal grandfather (father's father). In contrast, 外公 (wài gōng) is used specifically for the maternal grandfather (mother's father), and 祖父 (zǔ fù) is a more formal, written term for paternal grandfather.
