Definition
滂沱 is a literary stative verb describing water or tears flowing heavily and copiously. It appears almost exclusively in two fixed contexts: modifying 大雨 (torrential rain) and describing tears streaming down (often in the phrase 涕泗滂沱 or 泪如滂沱). It is not used alone without a noun — you cannot say 雨很滂沱; use 滂沱大雨 instead.
