Definition
溺水 (nì shuǐ) specifically means 'to drown' — a person or animal dies from being underwater and unable to breathe. Unlike 淹 (yān), which can also mean 'to flood' or 'to submerge' (not necessarily fatal), and 淹没 (yān mò), which is usually about water covering land or objects, 溺水 is always about the fatal accident of drowning.
