Definition
渺茫 describes something that is hard to see or hear clearly because it's far away, or a prospect/possibility that is very unlikely to happen. The literal sense applies to distant sights (e.g. mountains in fog) or faint sounds. The figurative sense is more common: when hopes, chances, or plans are '渺茫', they are uncertain and improbable — you can't count on them.
