Definition
消融 is a formal verb meaning 'to melt' but it's used for larger-scale or abstract melting. For ice caps, glaciers, and snow, it describes gradual melting over time. You can also use it figuratively for the dissolving of differences, barriers, or tensions. For everyday melting (butter, ice cube), use 融化 instead.
