Definition
浪漫主义 (làng màn zhǔ yì) is a Meiji-era Japanese coinage adopted into Chinese, literally 'romantic-ism'. It refers to the artistic and literary movement that emphasizes emotion, individuality, and nature — the counterpart to 古典主义 and 现实主义. Outside of art history, you can use it to describe a person's temperament (romantic idealism) or a style that prioritizes feeling over rules. The prefix 浪漫 originally came from English 'romantic' via Japanese 浪漫 (rōman), and 主义 is the standard suffix for '-ism'.
