Definition
流行 (liú xíng) has two connected meanings: 'to spread' (of diseases or news) and 'to be popular' (of fashion, music). Unlike 传播 (chuán bō), which means to actively disseminate information, 流行 describes the natural spread or trending of something. Compared to the formal 盛行 (shèng xíng), 流行 is the everyday word for what's currently in vogue.
