注册 (zhù cè) means 'to register' in a broad sense: creating an account, enrolling in a course, or registering a company. It is more general than 报名 (sign up for a specific event) and 登记 (record personal information); 挂号 is used only for hospital registration or registered mail, and 登录 means 'log in' (enter a system).
