泥 (ní) means wet mud/clay or a soft paste/pulp (e.g., mashed potatoes). Unlike dry soil/earth (土 tǔ, HSK4), 泥 is moist and sticky. For a general term covering both wet and dry earth, use 泥土 (ní tǔ, HSK7); for a savory fermented paste, use 酱 (jiàng, HSK6).
