沙漠 (shā mò) is a desert — a dry, barren area with little or no vegetation. 沙滩 (shā tān) is a beach or sandy shore, usually by the sea. The key difference is climate and location: 沙漠 is inland and arid; 沙滩 is coastal and often recreational.
