沉重 (chén zhòng) describes a heavy weight, either physical (more formal than 重 zhòng) or emotional/serious (e.g., mood, consequences). It carries a sense of burden or gravity, unlike 严重 (yán zhòng) which focuses on severity of problems. For physical objects, 重 is the everyday word; for tasks, 繁重 (fán zhòng) is more specific.
