Definition
汉城 (Hàn chéng) is the historical Chinese name for Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Since 2005, the official Chinese name has been 首尔 (Shǒu'ěr), but you will still see 汉城 in older texts and some informal usage. When reading Chinese materials about Korea before the mid-2000s, expect 汉城 to refer to Seoul.
