求和 (qiú hé) is a separable verb-object compound meaning 'to sue for peace' or 'to seek peace.' As a 离合词, the verb 求 and the object 和 can be separated when inserting measure words, duration, or other elements — for example, 求了一个和 ('sued for peace once') or 求过和 ('have sued for peace'). The object cannot come directly after the verb without a separation; you must say 向对方求和 or 求和于对方 rather than 求和对方. It can also be used in mathematics to mean 'to sum' or 'to find the sum,' though that usage is less common and typically appears as a compound noun (求和 formula).
