气氛 (qì fēn) refers to the atmosphere or mood of a place, event, or group of people — the feeling in the air, not the physical air itself (that's 空气 kōng qì). It is similar to 氛围 (fēn wéi) but 气氛 is more common in everyday speech for the mood of an occasion, while 氛围 is more formal and often describes the overall ambience of a place or setting.
