歼 is a bound morpheme (cannot stand alone) that appears in compound words related to destroying, wiping out, or killing, especially in military contexts. Common compounds include 歼灭 (jiānmiè, 'to annihilate'), 歼敌 (jiāndí, 'to destroy the enemy'), and 围歼 (wéijiān, 'to encircle and annihilate'). You will almost never see it used by itself.
