步 (bù) is the general word for a step in walking or a stage in a process. For a step in a procedure, use 步骤 (bùzhòu); for the sound or manner of footsteps, use 脚步 (jiǎobù); and 步伐 (bùfá) is a more formal/literary word for pace or stride.
