止渴 (zhǐ kě) is a separable verb (离合词, verb-object compound) meaning 'to quench thirst'. The verb 止 (stop) and the noun 渴 (thirst) can be separated when adding aspect markers or measure words, e.g. 止了渴 (have quenched thirst), 止一下渴 (quench thirst a bit). It often appears in serial verb constructions like 喝水止渴 (drink water to quench thirst).
