Definition
歇手 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to stop doing something' or 'to knock off work'. It splits between 歇 and 手 when inserting tenses, aspect markers, or duration: 歇了手, 歇过手. The object (the thing you stop) is introduced with a separate structure — you don't put it after 歇手 directly.
