检察院 is the Chinese term for the procuratorate (prosecutor's office), a government body responsible for approving arrests, prosecuting criminal cases, and supervising judicial proceedings. In China, the procuratorate is distinct from the courts (法院) and the public security bureau (公安局), and it also handles public interest litigation.
