极权主义 refers to a political system in which the state holds total authority over society and seeks to control all aspects of public and private life. It is often associated with historical regimes like Nazi Germany and Stalinist USSR. Unlike 'dictatorship' (which focuses on single-person rule), 极权主义 emphasizes total control of the state apparatus.
