Definition
束缚 (shù fù) is used almost exclusively for figurative binding — restricting thoughts, freedom, or behavior (e.g., rules, traditions). It contrasts with concrete tying words like 绑 (bǎng, tie up physically) and 系 (xì, fasten a rope or object). 束缚 is more formal and literary than those siblings.
