Definition
早 (zǎo) is an adjective meaning 'early' — it describes something happening before the expected or usual time. Unlike 上午 (shàng wǔ), which is a noun for the time period 'morning', 早 focuses on earliness relative to a schedule. It is also different from 先 (xiān), an adverb meaning 'first' in sequence or order.
