施主 originally referred to a person who gives alms or donations to Buddhist monks or temples — a lay benefactor. In modern Chinese, it is also used as a formal term for an organ donor (器官捐献者). The word carries a respectful tone and is most commonly encountered in Buddhist settings or medical/legal contexts.
