断然 (duàn rán) means 'resolute' as an adjective and 'categorically' as an adverb used before negative verbs (e.g., 断然否认). Compared to 坚决 (firm in will) and 果断 (decisive in action), 断然 emphasizes an unyielding, final stance. As an adverb, it differs from 毅然 (acting without hesitation): 断然 stresses outright refusal, while 毅然 stresses courageous resolve.
