Definition
斥 (chì) is a bound form (b.f.), meaning it always appears as part of a compound word, not alone. It contributes two main senses: (1) 'to scold, to reprimand,' as in 斥责 (chìzé, 'to reproach') and 呵斥 (hēchì, 'to berate'); and (2) 'to repel, to exclude, to oust,' as in 排斥 (páichì, 'to exclude') and 斥退 (chìtuì, 'to expel'). You cannot use 斥 by itself; you must pair it with another morpheme.
